In April, KI Jones Elementary proudly held its First Annual Math Steeplechase—an exciting event that had been years in the making. Earlier this year, Mrs. Nichols and Ms. Rodgers visited the Armijo High School Math Steeplechase to gain insight into how to successfully run the event. Using what they learned, the team collaborated to create a variety of engaging and challenging math stations for student groups to complete.

Over 60 enthusiastic 4th and 5th graders jumped into the fun of an after-school competition that had the whole room buzzing with excitement. Thanks to the support of dedicated staff and parent volunteers, each challenge station ran like clockwork—giving students the chance to think, collaborate, and shine. Smiles were everywhere as teams raced to complete activities, and the top three groups proudly took home ribbons. Every student was celebrated with prizes and snacks, making it a memorable afternoon for all!

KI Jones Elementary School hopes to make this event a lasting tradition, with plans to establish a Math Steeplechase Club on campus. A Steeplechase Club for math is a creative and engaging math enrichment program modeled after the idea of a steeplechase race, where students “run” through a series of math challenges, “jump” over tricky problems, and “splash” through puzzles in a fun, team-based format.

The ultimate goal for KI Jones students is to qualify and compete in the prestigious Bernard’s Annual Math Steeplechase in Stockton, where over a thousand student teams gather to put their math skills to the test.

"Our first Math Steeplechase was a huge success,” said Mrs. Nichols, the school principal. “Students competed with excitement and teamwork. We’re building a tradition of math excellence at KI Jones!"
